Scars -Body Condition Refresh

Scars are permanent marks on the skin. They can vary in appearance, texture, and colour, depending on factors such as the depth and extent of the wound and individual skin characteristics. There are several types of scars commonly experienced, including:

Hypertrophic scars – these scars appear as raised, thickened areas of tissue at the site of injury. They often remain confined to the original wound area and may gradually improve over time

Atrophic scars – atrophic scars are characterised by a loss of tissue, resulting in depressions or indentations in the skin. Types of atrophic scars include icepick scars, boxcar scars, and rolling scars (examples of acne scarring), which vary in shape and depth,

Keloid scars – keloids are raised, overgrown scars that extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound. They can be itchy, painful, and may continue to grow over time, leading to cosmetic and functional concerns.

Common causes of scars

Scars form as a result of the body’s natural healing response to injury or trauma. When the skin is damaged, specialised cells called fibroblasts produce collagen, a protein that helps repair and strengthen the skin. Depending on various factors such as genetics, skin type, and the severity of the injury, this process can sometimes lead to excessive or abnormal scar formation. Additionally, factors such as improper wound care, infection, and inflammation can contribute to the development of scars. Acne scarring is common in those who have been affected by frequent or severe bouts of acne, occurring when inflammation damages skin cells on the surface, or deeper within. This is often accompanied by skin discolouration.

Treatment options for scars

Refresh Medispa offers a range of treatments to effectively address minor scars (including acne scars) and improve skin texture and appearance. These treatments include Morpheus8 (microneedling with RF), microneedling, chemical peels, and dermal fillers. The energy induced by Morpheus8 helps to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin for improved skin tone and texture. Microneedling involves creating tiny punctures in the skin to stimulate natural healing and collagen remodelling. Chemical peels gently exfoliate the skin’s surface to reduce the appearance of scars and improve overall texture. Dermal fillers can fill in depressed scars, restoring volume and creating a more even skin surface.

A consultation with one of our trained practitioners will determine the most suitable treatment option, based on scar type, location and severity of the concern.
