Droopy eyelids, also known as ptosis, refer to a condition where the upper eyelid droops downward, partially covering the eye and affecting its appearance. This can result in a tired or aged look, as well as obstructing vision in severe cases. Ptosis can occur unilaterally (affecting one eye) or bilaterally (affecting both eyes) and may vary in severity from mild to severe.

Common causes of droopy eyelids

Common causes of droopy eyelids include ageing, muscle weakness, nerve damage, congenital factors, and certain medical conditions. With age, the muscles and tissues supporting the eyelids may weaken or stretch, leading to ptosis. Muscle or nerve damage, often due to injury or medical conditions like Bell’s palsy, can also impair eyelid function, causing drooping. Additionally, congenital ptosis may be present from birth due to abnormal development of the eyelid muscles or nerves.

Ptosis can impact both the aesthetic appearance of the eyes and visual function, potentially obstructing vision if severe.

Treatment options for droopy eyelids

Treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. At Refresh Medispa we offer a variety of options to achieve an eyelift. The Plasma Pen offers a non-surgical option for skin rejuvenation and mild tightening by delivering controlled plasma energy to stimulate collagen production, reducing wrinkles, scars, and improving skin texture.  Morpheus8 also has very effective treatment for the eye area achieved through the use of radiofrequency energy. For more significant cases of excess skin and especially a fat pad under the eye, AccuTite can help both remove the fat and tighten the skin through a tiny incision at the temple.

Our surgeon at Refresh Medispa can also offer an inhouse surgical blepharoplasty where the upper eyelid skin is excised under local anaesthetic. All these options help restore the natural contour and function of the eyelids.
